ECHINACEA AND ENDURANCE
According to a study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, participants who took 8,000 milligrams of echinacea daily for a month showed improvement in oxygen efficiency – less oxygen used during exercise – and felt less fatigue as a result, says study author.
DID YOU KNOW
Over 31 million people in the United States do not eat breakfast daily. Studies have shown that not eating breakfast aids in obesity.
A CUP OF JOE FOR LONGER LIFE
Science has settled on the best coffee dosage. A 28-years study found that among people who drank 3 to 5 cups a day, there were fewer deaths from heart disease (19 percent) and diabetes (24 percent) than among coffee abstainers. Java has many compounds, including chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant.
LACK OF SLEEP MAKES YOU FAT!
Multiple studies are verifying that sleep deprivation makes you fat! Four consecutive nights of reduced sleep (about 4.5 hours nightly) can increase insulin resistance by 16%, and reduce insulin sensitivity in fat cells by 30%, mimicking resistance seen in diabetics. Two consecutive 4-hour sleep nights increase the hunger hormone ghrelin by 28%, and decrease the satiety hormone leptin by 18%. Sleep is vital to fat cells, and they get droopy when they don’t get enough. To maximize health and minimize insulin resistance, make sleeping 7-8 hours nightly a high priority!
A half cup of vanilla ice cream has 230 calories. You’d have to do burpees for 23 minutes to burn it off.
WAS THAT A HEART ATTACK?
You may have had one and not realized it. When 1,800 men had heart scans, 40 percent o those with scarring consistent with a heart attack didn’t know they’d had one. See your doc if you feel mild chest pain, nausea, unexplained fatigue, or discomfort in the neck or jaw, especially if you’re over 50.
THERMOGRAPHY TO DETECT BREAST CANCER?
Thermography (infrared heat photography) has been in existence since the 1950’s, and over 800 studies now show it’s effectiveness in identifying breast cancer in women. Compared with mammography, thermography is able to detect cancer in 90% of the cases, with only a 10% false positive rate while mammography has a detection rate of 60-80% and a 27% false positive rate. Not only that, thermography can detect blood vessel growth long before tumors develop, and can detect smaller tumors more effectively as well. The best part is no squishing or radiation. To maximize health, find a physician skilled in breast theromoscans and consider (at least) alternating between thermography and mammography.
A PEAR A DAY KEEPS THE FAT AWAY
According to a study of 24,800 people, people who eat pears weight almost 8 pounds less than those who don’t. Also, pear eaters are 35 percent less likely to be obese. One reason: The higher fiber content in pears – about 30 percent higher than that of apples.
HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN
Many people gain from 1-7 pounds during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, primarily due to increased consumption of high fat and high calorie holiday treats. A Belgium study found that exercising during a fasting state, either before breakfast or 6 hours from your last meal, can actually burn more calories to help offset holiday feasting. Adrenaline levels (which help burn fat) are 2 times higher when fasting, and insulin levels (which promote fat storage) are 10 times lower when fasting. Test subjects were able to offset a 30% increase in high fat calories when exercising for 60 minutes before breakfast compared with subjects exercising after eating, or not exercising at all. To maximize fat burning weight loss, consider working out in a fasting state.
ORDER FISH AND BREATHE EASIER
According to a study, eating fish may cut your chances of having lung problems. People who ate four or more servings of fish a week had a 29 percent lower risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than those who had fish less than once a week. The reason: Higher fish intake indicates a better diet, which itself helps fight COPD.
GRANTS AND PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES
Unfortunately, major pharmaceutical companies are the leading source of medical research grants, tilting research towards drugs and away from natural (not profitable) protocols. Even the National Institutes of Health, the second largest funding source for medical research, is highly influenced by pharmaceutical funding. The 2013 Physicians Payments Sunshine Act is a new law, which requires medical device and pharmaceutical companies to disclose payments made to physicians to promote their products. Disclosures will be available on a searchable government database, providing transparency for potential conflicts of interest. As an informed consumer, consider investigating this new database when searching for physicians.
GOT A COLD?
One possible home remedy to stop a cough naturally (without over the counter medications) is to dissolve ice cubes in the mouth. To make the taste more palatable for children, consider freezing a nutritious homemade vegetable or fruit juice cube, or blend low sugar juices with ice to make an icy smoothie. The ice numbs the nerves in the throat to reduce coughing naturally.
GO NUTS FOR A BETTER COOKING OIL
Organic, unrefined Macadamia Nut oil is gaining favor as another healthy high heat cooking oil, along with coconut oil, avocado oil, and butter. The problem with many processed vegetable oils is their “burning” points are too low, creating a very unhealthy toxic fat when heated. Burned fats create damage inside blood vessel linings and damage cardiovascular health. To maximize health, use organic, unrefined Macadamia Nut Oil, coconut oil, avocado oil or butter when cooking. Save the heart-healthy Olive oil for salads, vegetables, and bread.
EXERCISE TO FIGHT CANCER
Overweight people have a 40% greater chance of developing cancer than their slimmer counterparts, in part due to the increased inflammation and resulting DNA damage created by additional fat cells. Minimize cancer risk by avoiding excess body fat. Exercise, rest, mindful eating, stress reduction, toxin exposure and now fat loss are all vital components to building a body that is inhospitable to cancer.
