A 12-ounce bottle of beer has 150 calories. You’d have to do burpees for 15 minutes to burn it off.
FIBER FIGHTS STROKE & HEART DISEASE
According to a study from the Netherlands, loading up on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains may stop arterial stiffness. Eating an extra 2 to 3 grams of fiber a day may help prevent stroke and heart disease later in life. Fiber may help reduce the inflammation that can cause the walls of your arteries, specifically your carotid arteries, to become less elastic, according to the study. An apple a day will cover it.

Unlike other cells, which contain an individual’s full DNA, the egg and sperm each contain only half of the DNA required to create a new human. Both halves must be combined for humans to reproduce.
SELF-HYPNOSIS AND CANCER
According to a study published in England with 90 subjects found that every cancer patient who listened to self-hypnosis tapes with the message that they have the power to influence their health outcomes, and who had doctors who told them these tapes might be helpful, were in remission. Contrastingly, all of the cancer patients whose doctors didn’t support the tapes were deceased. Apparently, both the prognosis suggestions from authority figures and the belief in personal empowerment have a tremendous effect on health outcomes. To maximize your chances of a good prognosis, take responsibility for your health, look for resources that support personal empowerment, and for goodness sake surround yourself with positively supportive authority figures.
According to an ongoing study at Long Island University, adding carvacrol – the active compound in oregano – to prostate cancer cells can cause the to self-destruct. Further research will explore if carvacrol retains this power after it’s been ingested. For now add oregano to your dishes.
YO-YO DIETING AND HEALTH RISK
According to a study published at Wake Forest University found that patients who lost weight and then regained it, showed increased harmful cardiovascular markers and risk of diabetes over those who were overweight but did not diet. The take home message from this study is that yo-yo weight gain and loss is not beneficial to long-term health, and in fact may be detrimental. To maximize health, investigate weight loss programs that include lifetime maintenance programs to ensure permanent weight loss and make every effort to minimize yo-yo dieting.
THE REAL COST OF JUNK FOOD
According to USDA researchers, an unhealthy diet may cost more than a healthy one. They studied about 4,400 foods through three cost-analysis measures (price per calorie, price per edible gram, and price per portion), and discovered that healthy foods are cheaper than unhealthy ones and contain more nutrients.

After eating too much, your hearing is less sharp. If you’re heading to a concert or a musical after a big meal you may be doing yourself a disservice. Try eating a smaller meal if you need to keep your hearing pitch perfect.
GET A CAC SCAN
A Coronary Artery Calcium Scan (CAC) is one of the best ways to determine if arteries are blocked with plaque buildup or calcium deposits. A CAC score of 10 indicates mild to moderate buildup, a score of 500 indicates plaque is blocking arterial flow, and scores have been seen as high as 1000. If CAC scores are low, indicating healthy, flexible arteries with no plaque, there may be no need for statins to control cholesterol levels, even if they are high. It is inflammation and blocked arteries that cause cardiovascular events, not necessarily high cholesterol. To maximize health, consider having a Coronary Artery Calcium Scan performed to asses your arterial fitness, and investigate anti-inflammatory diets.
YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE
According to a study form Germany, if you need an alarm to wake up, you’re more likely to gain weight. In the study 69 percent of the people reported having “social jet lag,” a situation in which your daily schedule is at least an hour off your internal body clock. Those who have social jet lag were three times more likely to be overweight. The reason: Sleep times that don’t regularly sync up with your body clock may alter your metabolism, the researchers say. Try going to bed an hour earlier and see if you wake up before your alarm.
SUPPORT BETTER HEALTH
Alternative physicians report increasingly positive results for patients who join a support group while attacking health challenges. Health issues ranging from cancer to weight loss improve faster with the understanding and support of fellow sufferers. Humans are social creatures, so it is logical that both accountability and support from a group could be beneficial. To maximize healthy outcomes, investigate the possibility of joining a support group when health challenges or behavioral problems arise.
WALK LIKE A PENGUIN
To minimize the risk of slipping while walking on snow or ice, copy the experts – Penguins. They lean forward placing all of their body weight on the forward leg, creating a perpendicular (downward) force, then they shift all of their body weight to the other leg as it moves forward, creating a “waddle” effect. This perpendicular force keeps direct pressure on the slippery ground, and does not allow a sideways force to get out of hand. It may look silly, but it’s better than busting it on ice. To prevent slipping on ice, try “waddling” like a penguin.
TOXINS, TOXINS, TOXINS
According to a comprehensive study by the U.S. Center for Disease Control testing blood and urine samples of 2,400 Americans found evidence of 148 different harmful chemicals present. 90% of samples had toxic pesticides, and many contained lead, dioxins, PCB’s, and other known toxins All Americans are heavily bombarded by chemicals known to be dangerous, and many others whose long-term and synergistic effects are unknown. To maximize health, carefully examine the products you use daily and make every effort to minimize your chemical soup exposure.
FIGHT FAT WITH FAT
Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have isolated new cells – beige fat – with nearly the same blubber-busting power as brown fat. Beige fat cells hide among white fat cells under your skin and switch between storing at and burning it. Preliminary research suggests that a muscle hormone linked with exercise may turn white fat into beige, but more study is needed.
ENZYMES FOR BETTER HEALTH
Proteolytic enzymes break down protein molecules and function throughout the body to relieve inflammation, and to digest food (protein). Live foods contain many helpful enzymes, but food processing removes them. When enzyme levels are low due to illness or advancing age, protein deficiency may occur, and healing times may increase. Supplemental proteolytic enzymes are relatively inexpensive and may be taken with meals when digestion is poor, or away from meals to aid inflammation. To maximize health, investigate the use of proteolytic enzymes to improve both digestion and inflammatory symptoms.
