Fun Fact #77
The human body makes anywhere from 1 to 3 pints of saliva every 24 hours.
Vitamin D Protects Against Type 1 Diabetes
The American Journal of Epidemiology published an article online on February 3, 2013 that revealed a protective effect for higher levels of vitamin D against the risk of type 1 diabetes in young adults. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that was formerly called juvenile onset diabetes; however, approximately 60 percent of diagnoses occur in men and women older than the age of 20 years.
Kassandra L. Munger of Harvard School of Public Health and her colleagues compared 310 U.S. active duty personnel diagnosed with type 1 diabetes between 1997 and 2009 to 613 control subjects matched for age, gender and other factors. Serum samples from the Department of Defense Serum Repository collected before diagnosis were analyzed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations.
THIS or THAT: Kettlebell vs Treadmill
In a study the two went head to head for a 10-minute workout – a treadmill run & kettlebell swings – and here’s what came of it. Both had a significant impact on cardio fitness (measured by heart rate & oxygen consumption).
The numbers:
Kettlebell
Avg. heart rate: 180
Avg. breaths per min: 36
Calories burned (participants’ avg. weight: 160) 125
Treadmill
Avg. heart rate: 177
Avg. breaths per min: 38
Calories burned (participants’ avg. weight: 160) 171
While the treadmill may have burned more calories initially, the kettlebell (strength training) revs up your metabolism so you keep burning calories for hours after your workout.
Fanning the metabolism flames
To keep metabolism stoked and to avoid binge eating from extreme hunger, eat 3 meals and 3 snacks daily with no more than 3 hours between. (3,3,3 Plan!) Keep portion sizes small, limit sugar, saturated fats, salt and junk food, and include protein with every meal or snack to stabilize insulin response. It is much easier to control intake when hunger is not an issue.
Health Tip #40
Excess body weight, especially around the neck, puts pressure on the airway, causing it to partially collapse.
Why prescription drugs have side effects
In order for pharmaceutical companies to patent their drugs and protect their research investments with monopoly status, they must prove their product is unique. Since naturally occurring herbs cannot be patented, most prescription drugs attempt to isolate the active ingredient in an herb and reproduce it chemically. The problem is there are many synergistic elements in an herb, and isolating components often creates unwanted side effects. Select natural herbs whenever possible to minimize the side effects of synthetic drugs.
Synthetically Produced Hormones Increase the Risk of Many Diseases
Studies showing increased risk of breast and uterine cancers, and cardiovascular disease from Hormone Replacement therapy were based on the use of synthetically produced hormones, which are not identical to those produced in the body. When bioidentical (natural) plant based hormones are used, these negative side effects are not replicated. Investigate natural hormone replacement to avoid the side effects of synthetic hormone drugs if needed.
This Amazing Fat-soluble Substance May Be Very Important
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an amazing fat-soluble substance necessary for energy production in the mitochondria and is especially concentrated in the heart and kidneys. Many heart patients have low CoQ10 levels, and Statin drugs used to reduce cholesterol significantly reduce CoQ10 levels. Adequate levels of CoQ10 are necessary to produce energy in every cell of the body. Consider adding CoQ10 for increased energy output, especially if taking Statin drugs or if cardiovascular disease is an issue.
Do This Before You Eat Sweets To Help Blood Sugar & Insulin
Consume one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before a sweet treat to help moderate blood sugar swings and insulin response. Apple Cider vinegar can also be consumed up to 1 hour past sugar consumption to moderate blood sugar spikes and avoid immediate fat storage for those with insulin resistance.
When & How To Take Immune Boosting System Herbs
The herbs echinacea, lomatium, astragalus, goldenseal and licorice are all very effective in strengthening the immune system and shortening the duration of colds. They can be taken together or separately, in pills or tincture (liquid form). Results are greatest if taken at first signs of symptoms before infection has reproduced extensively. Most immune system herbs should not be taken on a daily basis, but only as needed during acute illness.
